Introduction to Microsoft Access

  Summary: Covers the fundamental techniques for working with Access tables, queries, forms, reports, and databases.

Prerequisites: Completion of Introduction to Windows, or a good understanding of the Windows operating environment.

Class length: 1 day.

Targeted Skills:

  • Understand database concepts and terminology by exploring Access databases.
  • Use Access objects by introducing tables, forms, queries, and reports.
  • Design and create tables.
  • Add records to a table and modify the design of a table.
  • Find specific records and edit and copy values.
  • Select specific records and fields from tables using Access queries.
  • Use queries to perform calculations on data contained in tables.
  • Create forms for viewing, entering, and editing data.
  • Present data from your tables by creating reports that summarize and group information the way you need it.
  • Create a new database and import Access objects to it.

 

Intermediate Microsoft Access

  Summary: Students will learn how to more effectively work with queries, forms and reports in Access.

Prerequisites: Introduction to Microsoft Access or equivalent knowledge.

Class length: 1 day.

Targeted Skills:

  • Create select queries using advanced techniques.
  • Create parameter and action queries.
  • Create multi-table queries.
  • Design tables that include default values, validation rules and text, input masks, and indexes.
  • Create, delete and document table relationships.
  • Customize a form.
  • Create and enhance forms containing subforms.
  • Utilize command buttons and macros in forms.
  • Create grouped reports.
  • Create mailing labels.
  • Use Access data in other applications.

 

Advanced Microsoft Access

  Summary: The purpose of this course is to enhance students' abilities to design efficient tables and to enable students to incorporate some of the program's advanced features in their use of Access objects.

Prerequisites: Introduction to Microsoft Access, Intermediate Microsoft Access, or equivalent knowledge.

Class length: 1 day.

Targeted Skills:

  • Normalize sample tables by identifying common data problems.
  • Determine relationship types and establish referential integrity between two tables.
  • Join tables, examine editing limitations when joining tables, and create a crosstab query.
  • Investigate the format function, review the use and structure of a macro and explore event properties by using the Access Help system.
  • Customize forms by using properties, functions Control Wizards, and the Table Order dialog box.
  • Provide for user interaction and automate tasks using macros.
  • Enhance the design of a report and dynamically evaluate and highlight data by using macros in reports.
